Los elásticos intermaxilares forman parte de las herramientas que el ortodoncista utiliza para introducir fuerzas biomecánicas dentro de la boca. Existe un principio de la física que dice que a toda acción corresponde una reacción en igual magnitud y dirección pero de sentido opuesto. Esto significa que el uso de los elásticos debe ser manejados con prudencia, entendiendo muy bien las reacciones desfavorables o efectos deletéreos que se puedan producir en las mecánicas de trabajo.
Uno de los usos más comunes y donde se observa un mayor fracaso es en la utilización de elásticos intermaxilares para la corrección de las maloclusiones de clase II; El caso puede empeorar si el clínico no prepara el arco en la mecánica ortodontica. Por ejemplo, utilizando una curva reversa en el arco inferior para evitar el empinamiento del plano oclusal que acentúa la clase II.
