Dr. Jeffrey P. Okeson is a world-renowned expert in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and orofacial pain, with over 45 years of academic and clinical experience. He has been a full-time faculty member at the University of Kentucky since 1974 and currently serves as Dean of the College of Dentistry.

 

In 1977, Dr. Okeson founded the University of Kentucky’s Orofacial Pain Program, one of the first of its kind in the United States.  The Master of Science program he established was the first in the U.S. accredited by the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. To date, the program has trained over 65 full-time residents from 26 countries.

 

He is the author of two widely used textbooks: “Management of Temporomandibular Disorders and Occlusion” and “Bell’s Oral and Facial Pain”. These texts have been translated into 12 and 6 languages, respectively, and are standard references in dental education worldwide.

 

Dr. Okeson has published over 240 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has delivered more than 1,300 invited lectures across all 50 U.S. states and 59 countries.  His peers have recognized him as the World Ambassador for Orofacial Pain.

His numerous accolades include the University of Kentucky’s Great Teacher Award, the Provost’s Distinguished Service Professorship, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain’s Service Award, and the International Dentist of the Year Award from the Academy of Dentistry International.

 

Dr. Okeson is a founding diplomate and two-time past president of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and a past president of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.  He continues to contribute to national and international efforts to advance education and clinical standards in orofacial pain and TMD.
